Computer Aided Design (CAD)
CAD software packages such as NX, Catia and Solidworks allow Engineers to develop 2D drawings and 3D models.
Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) & 3D Scanners
Coordinate Measuring Machine are an automated measurement tool that can measure complex surfaces typically fixed in a single location. A 3D scanner on other hand converts physical objects into precise digital models, enabling you to quickly and accurately capture a product or assembly. Measurement accuracies vary based on the implemented tool though typically range between 0.0003 to 0.0030 inches. Though CMM can accurately generate most of the measurement data needed to create a CAD drawing or a Solid model effective usage of 3D scanner can shorten the design time accelerating the development forward.
Measurement Tools/Gauges/Surface Roughness Testers
Measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, digital protractors and various gauges can be utilized for measuring physical dimensions. Surface roughness testers are a tool that is used to determine the surface finish of a part. Different surface finishes have a cost associated with them, the smoother finishes are more expensive to produce.
